RDM School
Founded in 2005, the Almirante Tamandaré School is in the district of Peixe Bravo (Riacho dos Machados), 75 km from Equinox Gold's RDM Mine. The school serves a community of 350 families and currently has 160 students.
Peixe Bravo is a community comprised primarily by descendants of quilombo, a category of Indigenous people in Brazil. While the school receives funds from the municipal and federal government, private donations are used to improve the school's infrastructure and provide a higher quality of education for its students. The school's current wish list includes: construction of a computer laboratory; renovation of classrooms and air conditioning; and development of literacy and sports projects for young people and adults who have dropped out of school.
